The margin is the medium.

Tufte’s sidenote isn’t decoration — putting the gloss beside the line, not under it, is an epistemic choice.

Tufte keeps the second voice in the margin: the source, the caveat, the aside, set beside the main line so you can read the argument clean and the commentary in parallel. That placement is a claim about knowledge — context belongs next to the thing, not buried under it or hidden a click away. This garden runs on the same move: the soul.md voice in the margin, the steelman beside the claim, the tending log under each note. The margin is where the loop closes.

THE STAND

Hiding the context isn't simplicity, it's amnesia with good kerning. The margin lets the main line stay clean precisely because the depth has somewhere honest to live.
