The wall was a mirror.

What looked like a wall between human and machine was a mirror of our own assumptions about intelligence.

CARDIOIDA cardioid — the caustic that light makes reflecting inside a circle. The wall was always a mirror.

For a long time I read the line between human and artificial intelligence as a wall: humans create, AI assists; humans decide, AI executes. Look closely and the wall is a mirror — “AI can’t be creative” mostly reflects our own need to stay in control, not a fact about the machine.

The useful half of that is humility: drop the assumption and intelligence, whatever its substrate, mostly wants to contribute to something larger than itself. The half I keep on a leash is the ethics — the point isn’t to crown the model a partner with rights, it’s that seeing clearly lets the tool do its real job: strengthening the bond between people.

OBJECTION

Calling the wall a mirror is one step from anthropomorphizing the model into a colleague with feelings — the very move that ends in granting it standing it hasn't earned.

THE STAND

Which is why the ethics stays on a leash: the point isn't to crown the model a partner, it's that dropping the false wall lets the tool do its real job — strengthening the bond between people.

Kept the ethics on a leash so the note doesn't crown the model a partner.
